John McCarthy DO
Medical Director


Dr. McCarthy has served as the MedEvac Medical Director at Lehigh Valley Hospital since 1993. He has been involved in the Fire and EMS services for 22 years. During those years, he graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed an Emergency Medical Services Fellowship at the Albert Einstein Medical Center of Philadelphia. That lead to his positions of: Chief of Pre-Hospital EMS and Director of the Emergency Medicine Institute at the Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. He currently is also an attending Emergency Medicine Physician for the Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. Dr. McCarthy has also been actively involved in clinical research. Previous studies he has submitted for publication are: "Air Medical Use of Handheld Ultrasound for Blunt Abdominal Trauma.", "CFI: Chemically Facilitated Intubation - Pre-hospital Use of Midazolam for Intubation." Presently, he is conducting a research project for a pre-hospital, continuous, real-time 12-Lead transport monitor (ORTIVUS) for early identification of acute MI's and pre-hospital ischemia.

Keith D. Micucci RN, BSN, CEN, PHRN

Keith has been involved in Emergency Medicine for 16 years. He began his pre-hospital career at Medic 108 in Bucks County. He began at Lehigh Valley Hospital in 2001 as a staff/charge nurse in the Cedar Crest Emergency Department. In 2002 he joined the flight program fulfilling a dream of his. He served three years as a Patient Care Coordinator for the Emergency Department while continuing his work on the helicopter. Keith has worked in several Emergency Departments in the Philadelphia area. Currently, he serves as the president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association and works per-diem as a paramedic at the City of Allentown EMS. He graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing with a Diploma in Nursing and Immaculata University with a Bachelor in Science and Nursing. He is currently enrolled at DeSales University where he is pursuing his MSN. Keith contributes all of his success to his family who havesupported him 100% throughout his career.

Joseph Rycek RN, CFRN, CEN, CCRN, PHRN, CMTE

Joe, appointed to the Chief Flight Nurse position at The Lehigh Valley Hospital in 1999, has been a member of the Flight Team since 1996 after working as a staff/charge nurse in the Emergency Department from 1984. Joe's pre-hospital career started while he was in high school prior to his undergraduate studies at St. Francis College and Temple University. He completed his nursing education at the Albert Einstein Medical Center School of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1981 and worked in their busy inter-city Emergency Department until arriving at the Lehigh Valley's Level I Trauma Center.

Joe has obtained a wide variety of experiences with numerous organizations like the city of Allentown EMS, Cetronia Ambulance Corp, and Northampton Regional EMS to mention a few. Joe also is a Deputy Coroner for the County of Lehigh.

Joe presently co-coordinates the paramedic training program at the George E. Moerkirk - Emergency Medicine Institute with fellow flight nurse, Tom Rothrock.

Joe believes that his 25+ years in EMS, 20+ years as an Emergency Nurse, along with being a husband and father of three daughters has prepared him for most of life's challenges in the aeromedical industry.

Barry Mitchneck RN, MSN, CEN

Barry is a graduate of Northampton County Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing, Kutztown University with a Bachelors degree in Nursing, and DeSales University with a Masters Degree in Nursing.

Barry became a member of the flight crew in 1986 as a flight paramedic and continued in that role until he completed his nursing education. In his current role Barry is responsible for the education of the flight crew members as well as being involved in the development and implementation of policies and protocols in conjunction with the medical director and chief flight nurse.

Barry has also been actively involved in the creation of a professional practice model that encourages crew members to take an active role in the daily operation of the program.
